How Does the Natural Gas Liquefaction Process Work?

An LNG liquefaction plant integrates multiple processes, starting from the intake of raw natural gas to storage and final loading onto LNG carriers.

Pre-treatment

Raw natural gas entering the plant still contains impurities such as water, carbon dioxide, mercury, and sulfur compounds. These must be removed during the pre-treatment stage.

Pre-treatment is critical to prevent ice or CO₂ solids from forming and clogging pipelines at cryogenic temperatures. It also protects equipment from corrosion.

Liquefaction

Once purified, the natural gas is cooled through a series of complex refrigeration cycles, often using specialized refrigerants.

Storage

After liquefaction, the LNG is transferred into massive cryogenic storage tanks. These tanks are heavily insulated to maintain low temperatures and minimize boil-off gas losses.

Loading
